Don Leo Winery
Don Leo Mendel, originally from Linnich, Germany, arrived in Mexico in 1938 and began to work in the agricultural area where he started his love and passion for the field. The values of hard work and struggle were conveyed to his family, which in the same spirit and dedication to work has been created in his memory, Don Leo Vineyards. The first vineyard planting began in 2000 with a production of one hectare; currently they have expanded the vineyards to 35 hectares.
Don Leo is one of the highest vineyards in the world, located in the Valley of Tunal, Parras municipality, at an elevation of almost 7,000 ft. above sea level, the mountains, it gives more hours of cold temperature during ripening season, surround it. As a result, Don Leo vineyard’s wines have greater fragrance concentration and better varietal taste definition.
Due to its particular geographical location Don Leo Vineyards develop unique quality features in their wine production. Francisco Rodriguez is globally recognized as the most decorated winemaker in Mexico. Combining Francisco’s talent and the characteristics of these vineyards Don Leo’s wine has unique qualities. Some of the varietals that Don Leo Vineyards harvest are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
